AltShell is a clean and simple Windows Desktop geared towards providing a smoother user experience in tight spaces. Many aspects of AltShell’s appearance and function are configurable allowing AltShell to fit into various environments where the user prefers a light weight clean desktop experience.
AltShell started out as a small side project to provide a simple easy to use desktop environment for in-car PC applications that require Microsoft Windows. The initial use case was a high performance automobile, which required various Windows applications for tuning and monitoring engine control functions. Windows Explorer (Microsoft’s default desktop) was not ideal for this task since 80% of its functionality would never be utilized and the environment was just too clunky and hard to use on a small touch screen like the ones offered with many in-dash car monitors. Over time AltShell grew in capability and now supports various use cases where a simple straight forward desktop UI is preferred.
AltShell currently supports all versions of Windows Vista, 7, 8, and 10. Users can easily install AltShell without any risk to the current desktop environment with the option to revert back to Windows Explorer at any time.
